Welcome back to Spot Light, where we get you up close and personal with our fantastic team. Today, we're getting a closer look at Miki Takata, one of our massage practitioners in Uptown. Miki comes from a family of healthcare workers, from doctors to cardiologists, nurses to acupuncturists, and she says her work as a massage therapist is her contribution to that healthcare lineage. Read on for more about Miki and how she can help relax, soothe and heal you with bodywork.
What is the foundation of your practice?
My goal is to relieve the tension, anxiety and pain that accumulates in a person's body due to daily stress. I hope that my clients feel safe, relaxed and relieved after a session and that my work extends beyond their session and into their daily life. I hope that after a session, they are able to listen to their pain and tension as a sign to try to do things differently and to prevent these symptoms from building up and becoming chronic. Fundamentally, I just want to create positive change with my work and I feel fortunate and gratified when that happens.
What treatments to you specialize in?
I specialize in a combination of Eastern and Western Therapeutic Bodywork Techniques. My base is Shiatsu which is Japanese for "thumb pressure" and uses Traditional Chinese Medicine's Acupuncture points. Shiatsu is a physical therapy that supports and strengthens overall physical health and immunity. It works holistically in that it not only affects the body, but also one's psychological and emotional well-being.
I combine Shiatsu with Rehabilitative Massage in the form of Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy. The word myofascial means muscle tissue (myo) and the connective tissue in and around it (fascia). Myofascial pain often results from muscle injury or repetitive strain. When stressed or injured, muscles often form trigger points, like contracted knots, that cause pain and tightness.
I am also trained in Thai Yoga Massage, Active Release Techniques, Lymph Drainage, Prenatal Massage, Cupping, Specific Rehabilitative work including Rotator Cuff injuries and Hip Flexor Psoas work.
Why did you choose Spot as the place for your practice?
It was while visiting friends on a sustainable farm in NE Germany that my interest in massage therapy began to take shape. I saw how hard my friends worked on the farm and found myself giving them massage. Though untrained, body-work seemed to be a good fit for me and so I decided to look into it further when I returned home.
Upon returning to the States, I felt like it was time to make some big shifts in my life and so within a week I got a puppy and checked out a reputable local school. I was smitten by both; my puppy quickly became my closest companion and I delved right into studying Eastern and Western massage techniques at CenterPoint School of Massage.
One of the prerequisites of attending CenterPoint was getting a massage from an established place. Coincidentally, a friend happened to have gotten me a gift certificate to Spot Spa and I liked the vibe immediately. Happily, Spot accepted me upon my graduation from CenterPoint School and here we are today.
