Reflexology 101: What It Is and Why You Should Try It

FullSizeRender-1.jpg

When it comes to self-care, Reflexology is one of the most thorough modalities available. By working only on feet and hands, a single session can balance every body system! So what is it and why does it work? Let our reflexologist Katie O'Reilly give you the inside scoop!

The workings behind Reflexology are simple: Irritate the nerve endings found on your body to illicit a response in the body system connected to that nerve. Reflexology encourages the body to heal itself and promotes homeostasis.

While it may sound similar to Acupuncture or Shiatsu, Reflexology is based on Western medicine and nerve patterns rather than Chinese Meridians and Chi. Some overlap occurs between the two systems, but they do vary. Reflexology also aims to clear a nerve ending of any physical congestion. Believe it or not, your feet and hands collect debris that does not get moved out of your circulatory system and can inhibit blood flow to different parts of the body.

During a session, the practitioner typically uses their thumbs, fingers, and knuckles to work the nerve endings in a quick and rhythmic pattern. Sometimes small tools are used to protect the practitioner against fatigue and to work very small reflexes. The pressure used can vary from light to deep, but it is important to know deep pressure is NOT required to achieve results.

Because Reflexology balances all systems in the body, it is useful for almost any condition. It is especially great for people who simply like their feet and hands worked on, but do not want a manicure or pedicure. Common reasons people seek Reflexology are:

  • Stress/Anxiety

  • PMS

  • Plantar Fasciitis

  • Sciatic Pain

  • Chronic Headaches/Migraines

  • Neuropathy

  • Acute Illness (cold, sinus infection, etc.)

Be conscious of any injuries, cuts, bruises or infections that may be affected by Reflexology. If you have specific questions about whether Reflexology is recommended or contraindicated for you, please email katie@spotspas.com.
